How to Check Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid Change

Understanding how to check your transmission fluid in Raleigh can help prevent maintenance problems from becoming a serious headache. Your car’s transmission propels it forward so you’ll want to stay up-to-date on routine maintenance like checking your transmission fluid. Not sure how to measure the transmission fluid level in your new vehicle? Hendrick Kia of Cary is ready to tell you how to check transmission fluid with a dipstick, how to check automatic transmission fluid, and more in this guide. We’re your service team for jobs big and small.

Checking Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step Guide

To check your transmission fluid in Durham, you just have to follow these steps on how to check the transmission fluid level:

  1. Turn the engine on for a few minutes before proceeding. The engine should be warmed up to properly check the level. Make sure your car is in park before you get out and open the hood.
  2. Find the transmission fluid dipstick. On FWD cars, you’ll typically find it to the right of the oil dipstick. Check your owner’s manual if you can’t find it.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid, moving it around between your thumb and pointer finger. The fluid should be close to clear with a slightly pink hue. If it’s dirty or smells burnt, you’ll want to get over to the service center for replacement.
  4. Use a rag to wipe off the dipstick. Then put it back in the vehicle. Pull it out again and take a look at the level. If it’s under the “Full” marking, you’ll need to add more.
  5. Use a funnel to bring the fluid to where it needs to be, but don’t overfill!

Checking the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

If there isn’t a dipstick under the hood in your Apex vehicle, there’s a good chance your car has a sealed transmission. You might be asking “what is a sealed transmission?” When a transmission is sealed, that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to access. It just means that there’s no dipstick to check the transmission fluid level with. If your car’s got a sealed transmission, don’t try to check the fluid level. Schedule service with us and we’ll take care of it.
