How to Check the Coolant Level in Your Car

The coolant level in your vehicle can help determine your car’s performance levels on Apex drives. Thus, you need the answers to “what is coolant?” and a follow-up with “how to check coolant levels?” At Hendrick Kia of Cary, we will not waste any time getting to the coolant’s importance and how it affects your vehicle. Contact us for more information; we are happy to help.

What is Coolant?

Coolant in your vehicle is also known as antifreeze, perhaps a more familiar term. It is a liquid that regulates your engine’s temperature. Do not be fooled by the name; antifreeze is just as essential in the warmer months as it is in the colder months. You need to know the coolant colors as well since color plays a crucial role in your vehicle’s health.

What Color is Coolant?

The color of the coolant will tell you what steps to take next. The acceptable coolant colors are blue, green, yellow, or red. You will need to flush your coolant or change it if the coolant color appears tinted brown, black, or lacks color. Contact our service department to make a service appointment if you need a flush.

How to Check Coolant Level

Durham drivers should check their coolant every six months. It does not matter the type of vehicle or if your car, truck, or SUV is new or pre-owned. Here is how to check the coolant level in your vehicle:

  1. Let the engine cool.
  2. Check for exterior markings on the outside of the reservoir before opening the radiator cap.
  3. Check the owner’s manual to see if your vehicle needs the coolant to be premixed or diluted.
  4. Look for the line that reads “FULL.”
  5. If the coolant does not reach the “FULL” level, you should open the radiator cap and add coolant until it does.
  6. Inspect for leaks or damage before closing the hood.
